We believe the KIS Toddler Program – for 2-year-old learners – is just the beginning of learning. Joining the KIS Toddler Program starts children on the road to becoming lifelong learners at an early age, a time when their young minds are so open to learning. We believe our Toddler Program not only provides foundational learning experiences but is also an important stepping stone into the IB PYP preschool, where your child will experience a highly regarded inquiry-based
Our daily program and routines are designed to develop and support each child’s individual needs and curiosity. Our Early Years toddlers participate in sensory-based learning experiences and activities under the guidance of our Early Years staff, who are committed to nurturing and positively reinforcing every student.
Consistent with KIS tradition and values, our Early Years toddlers experience the benefit of an English-medium program within our truly multicultural community.
Our Early Years toddlers will grow and develop in these important primary skills:
Toddlers’ fine motor skills, which include finger and hand movements, are developed through a variety of activities, from finger painting, to using small instruments/utensils to pick up small objects, to manipulating clay.
Gross Motor Skills development includes activities like batting at objects, kicking, jumping, dancing, and running. Activities are also designed to help improve their hand-eye coordination in games that emphasize throwing and catching.
Toddlers begin to develop the emotional skills they will need in their lifetimes, such as patience, cooperation, and sharing. They learn to deal with all of their emotions in a calm, supportive environment.
Toddlers develop an awareness of their classmates and move on to simple sharing activities. Your child will be encouraged to wave goodbye and take turns.
Our Early Years toddler teachers understand how toddlers communicate. The goal is to teach toddlers to put their wants and needs into words. Toddlers will listen to and gradually start singing simple songs, reciting nursery rhymes, and expanding their vocabularies.
Cognitive skills include thinking, learning, and the accumulating of knowledge. The Early Years Toddler Program is designed to help toddlers learn about and investigate their environment. Your toddler will begin to do things like count and sort toys by shape and color and size.
Separation may be difficult for some parents and toddlers. Each family will have a different experience. Teachers and staff will work to ensure that the process is as gradual and gentle as possible. Be assured, this adjustment and separation phase is very normal for you and your toddler.
Each toddler is given a cot to sleep on, and these are cleaned regularly. Parents should bring bedding and perhaps a soft toy or comfort item from home. These will stay at school during the week and be sent home once a week. Toddlers may sleep 1 - 2½ hours, and if there are specific family needs, the parents may communicate these expectations with teachers.
Our Early Years staff works with parents to determine a good time to work on potty training. When parents would like to start potty training, they should initiate the process at home and inform teachers so this effort will be fully supported on both fronts. After that, your child will be taken to the bathroom at school within every hour or less, depending on your child’s needs. During the initial stage of potty training, the children still wear pull-ups or diapers during nap time. We also encourage parents to leave extra sets of clothes for their child in case of accidents. Remember, this is an exciting milestone in your child’s development.
